Columbia High School, Maplewood Middle School, Clinton Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Tuscan Elementary and Seth Boyden School; South Orange Middle School, Marshall Elementary, South Mountain Elementary and the South Mountain Annex. Elementary Education is based in traditional, family-friendly buildings with up-to-date facilities, including computers and Internet access in all schools and modern media and technology centers. Special education services begin with pre-K programs, a strong support program is available for students needing additional assistance, and gifted enrichment programs are available to 4th and 5th graders. More than sixty foreign languages are spoken in the homes of Maplewood-South Orange students and ESL instruction is provided to students who need it. Middle School: Maplewood and South Orange Middle Schools serve grades six-eight, guiding students academically and socially through the middle years and preparing them for the transition to high school. Along with a well-structured academic foundation, middle school students also are involved in character-building programs and community activities. Music and drama are highlighted in the All School Musicals involving students in all aspects of putting on a show, from acting to set design. Columbia High School: Founded in 1885, Columbia High offers academic excellence and a wide range of elective courses and extracurricular activities. Noted alumni range from sexologist Alfred Kinsey (1912) to architect Peter Eisenman (1950), Olympic runner Joetta Clark (1980) and Grammy award winning musician Lauryn Hill (1993). In 1992-93, Columbia High School was named a Blue Ribbon School for Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Ultimate Frisbee was invented here in 1968. Columbia offers a strong college preparatory curriculum, with 24 AP offerings. Five or more Columbia High School seniors are usually selected as National Merit Semi-Finalists each year. Electives include forensic science, TV production, animation and computer graphics, filmmaking, music technology, philosophy, Japanese and Project Adventure, a high ropes course.
