About the Millburn-Short Hills, New Jersey Area

This is my town, the place I call home.

I currently live in Millburn-Short Hills with my husband and four children. So it is obvious why schools are so important to the Winterbottom family.

While prestigious Short Hills is part of Millburn, the communities carry distinct identities.

Together they win constant accolades for their quick New York City commute and their excellent school system. It is one of the best in the nation. Individually, Millburn is a comfortable suburb, while Short Hills’ reputation is one of privilege and extraordinary homes.

You can come for a day or even longer. Stay at the town's five-star hotel or go shopping at the upscale Short Hills Mall. At the same time, Millburn and Short Hills are rich in history, culture and physical beauty.

New Jersey Transit runs through both Millburn and Short Hills.

For work, theatre or shopping, it is a quick commute to New York City on either the express or local trains. And besides the cute downtown shopping center of Millburn-Short Hills, you also have the famous upscale Short Hills Mall. If you are coming from out of town to look at homes, and want to stay overnight, you can stay at one of the local hotels. Stay at the local Grand Summit Hotel (908-273-3000) or there's even a five-star hotel with world-class spa right in town.

Short Hills was one of the first planned commuter suburbs in America.

Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the roller window shade, developed the Short Hills Park district and reportedly supervised its design and construction, including the sixty Shingle Style and Queen Anne homes originally built.

Today, Millburn-Short Hills has approximately 6,000 homes and 20 apartment buildings. Fortunately, these towns are also endowed with enormous amounts of open space. Part of the Reservation lies within Millburn, as do numerous municipal parks, a golf course, the Cora Hartshorn arboretum and three bodies of water.

Millburn's Paper Mill Playhouse is a one of New Jersey's most celebrated theaters.

This 1,200-seat professional theater offers musicals, plays, international performers and children's programs year-round. Bring the family out for a show and be sure to leave time to check out the town. Schools are key.

Our area Public Schools are top in the state and the country. All of them are supported by very active parent and teacher organizations, which contributes to their continued strength over the years. High quality schools ensure higher property values for our homeowners.

Millburn-Short Hills Public Schools — 973-376-3600

Millburn and Short Hills share a common school system. Millburn High School, Millburn Middle School, Deerfield Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Hartshorn Elementary, South Mountain Elementary.

Elementary: Millburn Elementary Schools house an active K-5 learning environment where professional and dedicated faculty interact with students to help foster growth and development in each child. The belief that each child has his or her own strengths that need to be developed to attain educational and personal excellence is supported. Each of the five elementary schools has approximately 450 students, with an average class size of 20 students.

There are computers in each classroom that are connected to the Internet and have e-mail and video capabilities. Classrooms have television monitors connected to computers for instructional use. There is also a computer center, where specific skills are taught and students conduct research projects. The instructional platform is Apple Macintosh.

Formal reading instruction begins in grade one. Emphasis is placed on reading, listening, speaking and writing and integrated throughout the grades. Beginning in grade four, students may participate in musical instrumental instruction. Choral programs and band performances are seasonal events. In the mathematics, concepts and computation are linked and problem solving is emphasized. Science and Social Studies are presented thematically and are often integrated with the other subjects.

Millburn High School: For the last ten years, Millburn High School has been consistently recognized as one of the 'best' high schools in New Jersey by such publications as New Jersey Magazine and Money Magazine. Recently Millburn High School was ranked the number one high school in the United States by Jay Matthews, Education Writer for the Washington Post, in his book "Class Struggle: What's Wrong (And Right) With America's Best Public High Schools".

MHS offers students a rigorous, stimulating, and diverse academic program delivered by an experienced and dedicated faculty. Our students perform at an extraordinarily high level while maintaining substantial involvement in interscholastic sports, clubs and activities and community service. Volunteerism is emphasized school-wide through service organizations, a peer-tutoring program and community related projects.

MHS is also extremely proud of its programs offered by the Special Services Department. Instruction in our Resource Room, ESL and BSI classes is exemplary. The implementation of in-class support and inclusion strategies has enabled us to provide individualized instruction in many courses. Currently, curriculum writing in all academic disciplines is being reviewed to include core curriculum standards.

Most realtors offer a free school report. I do, too.

But more importantly, I can tell you things about the area schools that no report generated by a computer will ever know. Call me for first-hand experience of the local schools. Or, contact me by email and I'll get back to you immediately with a phone call, a free report, or a brochure from a local school.

Real Estate Tips
Financing Your Home >New Loans

If you are considering applying for a mortgage to purchase a new home or to refinance your present home, don't delay. Despite fluctuation in interest rates, lenders are still processing many new loan applications.

You should gather all the necessary paperwork before you apply, and submit your loan application as soon as possible. At a minimum, the information required by a lender will consist of proof of your earnings and a clear picture of your total monthly income and expenses. If you are self-employed, or have long-term obligations such as alimony or child support, the preparation time and the amount of paperwork increases.

Despite the need to move rather quickly for a mortgage in today's market, you should "make haste carefully." Shop carefully for your loan by comparing all costs and terms. With the number of lenders vying for your business, new and better deals are always appearing.
